Lightning (C48) connector will be replaced by C89 and C94 in February 2019

According to Apple’s August 2018 EOL, Lightning connector (C48A, C48B) will be replaced with Lightning (C89) and Lighting (C94). C89 will be the direct replacement for C48 while C94 will be used for a USB-C™ to Lightning cable. MFi Adapter will not be able to submit any product plan which incorporates the current Lightning (C48A, C48B, and C48C) after February 28, 2019. Based on the notice, its last ship date will be July 31, 2019.

Based on the input from MFi management, C48 will still be the mainstream connector for the first half of 2019 due to the limited supply of C89 and C94. The new connectors (C89 and C94) will not be widely available until the second half of 2019. As a result, Elka reminds our clients who are selling Lightning to USB-A cables to check their current inventory and advise us of your sales forecast for the first half of 2019. This should be done by the end of November 2019 so that Elka can procure enough C48 connectors for your production plan request.

C89 is a new Lightning connector to replace C48. It allows a Lightning connector to integrate with a USB-A plug and/or a USB-B plug, supports USB 2.0, and is compatible for iPhone Xs, iPhone XR, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 8 and any other legacy iPhones. Lightning (C94) is made for a Lightning to USB-C cable which can support USB Current and USB Power Delivery (PD). Apart from Lightning to USB-A cables, Elka is active in developing USB-C to Lightning cable, and we will try to make it available in January 2019.
